Objectives:
1. Development of interpersonal relationship among past and present pupils of the school.
2. Extending friendly relationship and the spirit of friendliness among past and present pupils.
3. Participation in socio-religious activities and the development of such activities for the enhancement of the religious aura.
4. Participation in selected activities conducive to the development and progress of the welfare and honour of the school.
5. To create an environment, in which the present students could make use of the professional skills of past pupils.
6. Evaluation of special skills, credentials etc., of past and present pupils of the school.
Sumana Balika V Ratnapura’s aim is to be a leading school
Due to the untiring
efforts of Rev. Henpitigedara Gnanaseeha Thero, Ratnapura Sumana Balika
Vidyalaya was started in 1952 in a temporary shed at Pattiyagedara.
Today the school has emerged as a reputed girl’s schools in Saaragamuwa
Province with more than 3000 students and 152 teachers.
The school created a great difference to the history of Sabaragamuwa
when Rev. Henpitagedara Gnanaseeha Thero arrived in Sabaragamuwa in
1935. His arrival was a major milestone to the development of Buddhism
in the area.��Sri Sumana Maha Vidyalaya and Sumana Balika Vidyalaya are
glowing results of his efforts. In addition to the service done for the
Education sector, the Thero did a great service by uplifting the living
standards of the poor people in the area as well.
Established in a small shack in 1952 as a private school managed by a
board of directors, Sumana Balika was later registered as a Government
school in 1961. The year 1957 was a significant year for Sumana Balika
as they moved into a new environment and was declared open by then Prime
Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike. Since then they have developed rapidly
and earned the National School status in 1992.
Today Sumana Balika Vidyalaya is a fully equipped school with 25
buildings, an Indoor stadium, an Audio visual room, a Computer unit,
Library, a school bus, two science laboratories and a school hostel. The
serving principal Mrs. Malani Ranasinghe is a dedicated administrator.
She is the 11th principal and was appointed in 2011.
Sumana Balika has shown her skills in both curricular and
extracurricular activities. The primary section is a great asset to the
school. They have proven their abilities in the Grade 5 scholarship
examination. In 2012, twenty students got through the examination while
L.L. Pamudu Sarasith Maduranga obtained183 marks.
The G.C.E. (O/L) examination brought 88.8% success in 2011 and 21 of
them got 9A’s. The Bi-lingual unit was initiated in 2004 and the first
batch sat for the examination in 2009. Students of this section gained
100% results and Samudi Hansani Witharana was placed second in the
district in 2010.
The Advanced Level stream was first established in 1957 and in 1960
the very first student Miss.C.P. Liyanage entered the university from
the Arts Stream. Since then a large number of students have entered the
leading universities. In 2012 around 48 students from the Science
stream, 83 from Art stream and 86 from Commerce stream got the chance to
enter universities.
Sumangala Balika Vidyalaya is one of the leading schools in the
island for its sporting talents. Annually they do well in all sports
especially in athletics. Nayomika Gimhani, Chalanika Lakshani,
R.A.Chamika Jayamini and Harshani Wathsala Kumary participated at the
Junior Athletics Games held in Colombo and Chamika Jayamini won third
place in the 3000m steeple chase. Harshani Wathsala Kumary bagged the
second place at the Invitation Athletic Games held in Victoria,
Australia.
Sumana Balika has done well in theaesthetic field as well. Thilini Nimesha
Hindurangala and A.D.Heshani Pabasara bagged the first places at the
2011 All Island Dancing Competition. Gihani Nimeshika won the Gold medal
and M.S. Raveeshka obtained the silver medal at the 41st International
Childrens Art Exhibition, 20111 held in Japan. The school Orchestra was
placed second at the 2012 All Island Music Competition.
The cadets of Sumana Balika showd their colours in the 2011 at the
Harmon Los/De Zoysa camping competition and was placed fourth in the
island. K.K.J. Udeshika was selected as the best shooter while,
P.B.W.S.Malshani elected as the best commando at the event.
Having a short life span of 61 years, Sumana Balika Vidyalaya
twinkles as one of the best schools in Sabaragamuwa Province and the
unquestioning obedience of the students has given glory to the school.
No doubt it will be a leading school in the island in the near future.
